The 'Fruit of the Spirit' - Goodness
I really feel that that goodness follows on from kindness, because goodness is where we act on kindness. It's where we carry out good acts. This can vary from the small things, like making someone a cup of tea or giving someone a lift home, to the big acts of goodness, like giving a large some of money to someone in need, serving those in other countries that need help. Goodness covers so much ground and to be fair it is easy for us to carry them out. Then why is it that a lot of the time we overlook these acts? Why is it when we see someone in need or when the opportunity arises to do good, we just turn the other way and have nothing to do with it?
For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. - (1 Peter 3:10-11) (NLT)There have been many times where I have looked over doing good works. I often try to get out doing the washing up, I try to avoid making tea or coffee at work. Even when I pass a homeless individual in the street, I don't even bear them a glance. But what I have come to find is that doing good works is really fulfilling. It has got to the point now that I am more willing to do the washing up because I know it will ease the strain on those who have to do it most of the time. I find a real sense of peace and fulfillment after just offering to take someone home. It really is simple - Good acts not only make the person you're doing good to feel peace, comfort, love, thankfulness etc, but it makes you feel more fulfilled, satisfied, content etc.
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. - (Galations 6:9-10) (NLT)I don't really have much more to say on this. It's one of those things that you will only truly understand if you carry it out. If you realise that you're one of those people that often sit back and not get involved, why not step into midst of those who just need that someone to offer a helping hand. If you're one of those people that continue to act in goodness, keep on keeping on. Why not try a random act of Goodness today and just see what the response to it is!
Faith without Good Deeds Is Dead
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. - (James 2:14-17) (NLT)This verse for me sums it all up. Though many of us can live my faith and get on in our everyday focusing on ourselves and where we're going, if we do not follow up our faith by doing good to others....then our faith is in fact dead. Good deeds fill us from within and help us grow.
